Lately, Iāve been feeling a bit anxious about my career trajectory.
Iāve been diving into all sorts of programming-related fieldsā
š¹Ā Game DevelopmentĀ | šĀ Web DevelopmentĀ | š¤Ā AI ModelingĀ | šĀ Cybersecurity
While Iāve thoroughly enjoyed the journey, I started wondering:
Am I spreading myself too thin?
Am I hurting my future by not going deep enough into any single discipline?
šÆ The Power of a T-Shaped Developer
Then, I stumbled upon the concept of theĀ T-Shaped Developer. Itās essentially a blend of being a jack-of-all-trades while also specializing in one area.
š Ā The Horizontal BarĀ ā Broad knowledge across multiple fields.
šĀ The Vertical BarĀ ā Deep expertise in a specific domain.
And apparently,Ā this is a good thing!Ā ā Companies actually value developers who have a strong core skillset but can also adapt and collaborate across disciplines.
š” Why This Matters
That realization gave me a huge sense of relief. I may not have gone too deep in one specific field yet, but Iāve beenĀ building a strong foundationĀ in many. That, in itself, is a strength.
šÆĀ Exploring different domains allows you to find what truly excites you.
šÆĀ Trying out different fields isnāt a waste of timeāitās an investment in figuring out what you love.
š® The Future? Who Knows!
For now, I thinkĀ web developmentĀ will be my main focus. But who knows?
The beauty of being a T-shaped developer is that youāre never boxed in.
And if I end up enjoying everythingĀ tooĀ much? Well, maybe Iām justĀ cooked.Ā šš„
